Điệp Khúc Nhớ Đảo
                          Nguyễn Công Khanh 07-2020

Ngày Mai Trở Lại Đảo.
Biển có còn xanh.
Rừng có còn hoang.
Trời có còn nhiều mây trắng.
Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Cỏ may có còn vờn nhau tới mãi cuối đồi.

Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Con sấu già đêm có còn quẫy,
Trong lạch sâu Cửa Cạn.
Bãi Bổn, sao biển năm cánh có còn,
nằm soải dài dưới rặng dừa thưa.

Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Có còn ghẹ xanh ghẹ đỏ,
Trên bến vắng Hàm Ninh

Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Bầy cá voi có còn nằm phun nước,
Mỗi mùa ruốc đến rủ nhau về.
Lũ cá heo có còn chờ,
Rỡn cùng thuyền trên sóng.

Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Có còn chim biển bay ngược gió,
Đưa ta về những đảo mờ xa.

Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Có đêm nào còn trong,
Đèn lập lờ trên đỉnh Bokor,
Dẫn lối về tránh Vũng Trâu Nằm.

Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Mưa lũ có còn đổ,
Sóng ngập tràn bờ nước Dương Đông.

Ngày mai trở lại đảo.
Xuôi thuyền về An Thới.

REFRAIN OF MISSING THE ISLAND           by NGUYỄN CÔNG KHANH 07.2020

Translated from Vietnamese into English by Hương Cau Cao Tân

on 23.02.2021 in British Columbia, Canada

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if the ocean is still blue in colour,

And the forests are still having their wilderness,

And the sky is still covered with many clouds in their whiteness.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if the chrysopogon stalks are still playing together at hills’ ends forever.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if the night old crocodile is still tossing and turning over

In the Cửa Cạn Shallow Port’s deep water

And in Bổn Beach, if five pointed starfish are still

Stretching fully under rows of coconut trees so few.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if there are still blue and red sentinel crabs in living

On the deserted quay of Hàm Ninh

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if the flocks of whales are still lying spouting water

Waiting for the season of the sergestidae to come back, or

If the flocks of dolphins are still waiting there anymore

To play with the boats on the waves along the shore.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if there are still sea birds that ride against the wind over,

That will bring me to faraway islands, so far that they are visibly blurred.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if there are still some nights when the sky is getting clearer.

When the lights are flashing on Mount Bokor,

Guiding the way, avoiding the Hollow of The Lying Buffalo.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if the tropical rains are still pouring down the water,

If the waves are still overflowing the coasts of Dương Đông as ever.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

I will be riding the boat downstream to An Thới later,

Visiting the Ba Làng Village of religious followers,

Refraining myself from coming to Point Ông Đội’s border,

Since we already have the foods of Biên Mai, which are sweeter.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Reminding myself to visit Thơm Island, a place of nature,

To review if the school of tiny fish swimming in the water

Is still residing in the coral reef in order to wander.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Where the sounds of guns can be heard no longer,

Where a member of the team of Village’s Defenders

Or the guerilla fighter across the river

Will only once in a while pull the rifle’s trigger

Lest they destroy the heavenly realm of villagers.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Just to long for my Phú Quốc doggie the retriever,

That has been with me so long in friendship,

In the remote desolate district,

Who has been lost somewhere somehow,

Leaving an unhealable hurting wound in my heart now.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller

Where the last wild buffalo has already died.

Where the last wild buffalo has already died.

And the old myth has broken into pieces,

And the old myth has broken into pieces,

It has truly broken into pieces …

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Reminding myself to go back to the Mansion of the Master

Wondering if the graves on the islet beside the river,

Where the hundred year old ones of the faithful followers,

Will be brought back in time to Heaven by God the King of All Orders.

Tomorrow I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if the National Guards’ Cemetery in diaspora beyond the runway,

Will still be longingly looking over for the home country so far away.

Tomorrow when I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Wondering if there is still the stilt house at the sea port looking over,

Where rows of coconut trees are providing the cool shade,

Where the girl of the old years has probably lost her patience to wait.

Tomorrow when I will be returning to the island as a traveller,

Letting the sixty-year-old story become fader

Resigning myself to let it be immersed in time forever

Resigning myself to let it be immersed in time forever.

Ngô Thế Vinh’s Anthology II - Portraits of Literature, Art, and Culture is a masterful act of reclamation, a radiant arras woven from the lives and legacies of eighteenliterary, artistic, and cultural figures who defined South Vietnam’s vibrant intellectual scene before the cataclysm of April 30, 1975. This collection is not merely a gallery of portraits but a resolute stand against oblivion, preserving the humane, dynamic, and innovative spirit of the Republic of Vietnam (RVN). With a physician’s precision and an exile’s longing, Vinh crafts a narrative that resurrects a cultural heritage nearly erased by decades of suppression, offering readers a window into an era that was as fleeting as it was profound.

I follow the flight of a butterfly, It disappears into the sunlight. I gaze into the petals, and see your radiant smile— You say I'm hard to please, like the longing I carry.

** The sky nonchalantly turned crimson in the waning sun / Forlorn conches tooted amidst pressing sounds of drums / Stashing his oars, the fisherman headed back for the distant wharf / Tapping a horn, the buffalo boy returned to his hamlet, lonesome

With an inconsistent and always “pivoting” policy, with a negligible total investment, over the past 50 years since 1975, the United States has made almost no positive and effective moves to prevent China’s expansion and encroachment – not only in the Mekong River basin – but also in the East Sea. To be able to counterbalance Beijing, of course, Washington needs to have a strategic vision, accepting a commensurate price to pay in order to restore its long-standing influence on the Mekong River Chessboard.
